Daily Guide Devotional: "I am Against You"

Text: Jeremiah 51:25-51

This is God speaking to Babylon. He says in verse 25, "I am against you" and he has his reasons:

• They have destroyed all the earth ( v 25)
• They have devoured, crushed and swallowed up the lord's inheritance (v34)
•  They caused the slain of Israel to fall (v49)
• they invaded the sanctuaries of the lord's house (v51)

For these sins, the lord has set his face against Babylon and he has decreed his purpose "I will make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant" (v29). 

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Let all men beware. God is a God of justice. He has enshrined his laws in the hearts and consciences of men. Even those without the law he judges without the law. Let the whole world hear and fear our great God. He is the ruler of the earth and he shall have his say, no one can stop him. When men are living their lives as if there is no tomorrow, no judgement, arbiter and reckoner...let them remember that "every day may be for the thief but one day is for the owner of the house". God is not an absentee landlord. He is God in heaven who rules in the affairs of men. Babylon the great came crashing down at God' s decree. 

See verses 46-47 to know that this decree didn't just come at once. "Rumours will come year after year'. These were to be warnings and signs to Babylon, yet it did not repent in dust and ashes. So many lives, communities, nations have been marked for God's judgement even now. He still sends his prophets one way or another to announce his sentence. To any who will hear and repent, there is a place for mercy in God's hand. But if they utterly refuse to embrace God's divine escape route JESUS for the judgement due (for their sins) the wrath of God cannot be stopped. Babylon the great was great only in man's eyes. All creations, structures, powers, principalities, kingdoms and thrones remain only created things in the eyes of God. He can pull any down at his own discretion. He will exalt the humble and always abase the proud.  No flesh shall glory in his presence.
