DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL: A CRY OF DEVASTATION

 

Text: lamentations 3:1-18

Jeremiah laments with the lamentations of Job. His laments took on an accusatory stance against God. It is a situation experienced by a man who has known fellowship with God. Now, he feels cut off. He prays but there is no answer (verse 8). God is being accused also of lying in wait like a lion in ambush who turns his prey into pieces (verse 10) these are serious allegations against God by the prophet. He is also aware of the cause of this devastation, why then does he lament in this manner?

When afflictions comes as a result of sin to a nation even the righteous also suffer. We live in a fallen world. We all share this space called the earth. What is happening in one end of the earth can affect other areas on the Globe. Therefore there is serious need for intercession. The book of Jeremiah shows us that even the prophet was not exempt from the aftermath of the fall of Jerusalem. He had his own share of the trials. His lament also shows his humanity. No one is immune to suffering or hardship. No man, no matter how spiritual can witness the devastation orchestrated by God himself and not be humbled.

God is mighty. We must always remember this. We can't contend with him. It is his mercy that keeps pardoning us. If he should unleash his wrath no man can stand. Let this be a warning to all of us today. Let this cause us to rise up,  pray and intercede for our families and nations. When our people remain obstinate against God's warning and repercussions come, even we who obey and honour God will feel the impact of his wrath. May we return to the old ways. "Keep not silent, you who make mention of the lord, give him no rest until he establishes  and till he makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth" (Isaiah 62;7)
