AWAKE THE DAWN: SINGING PSALM 89:1

Psalms 89:1

I will sing of the mercies of the lord for ever, with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations (KJV)

Psalm 89 is one of the long psalms in the bible listed under Ethan the Ezrahite, a popular temple musician in the old testament. ( read the full psalm here). As at the time of composing this psalm, everything the lord  promised to David seemed not to be coming forth. God had promised that he will keep the dynasty of David for ever. But here, Jerusalem was in ruins. They had been taken captive and enemies were mocking them. They have become downtrodden; in the midst of it all, God's promises seem ironical. What did the psalmist do? He began by reminding God of his faithfulness. Then he placed the present situation of the country side by side with God's promises. He refused to give in to despair. He will rather sing about God's mercy and faithfulness.

Did God establish David's throne after all? Of course he did and he is still doing it. Jesus is that root and offspring of Jesse who reigned,  who is reigning and who will reign for ever.  When we face challenges that seem to negate God's promises in our lives we must not fall into the error of calling God a liar or limiting his faithfulness. His promises expands beyond one single generation. Has he made a specific promise to you and your descendants? Have you recognised a promise in his word for you in the scriptures? Hang in there. Remind him of his word for he will never fail. The one who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. He is watching over his word to perform it. Never lose hope, never give in to fear. He will surely be on time to keep his promise. But remember, his timing may not be the same as yours. May his peace saturate your heart today and always. May your soul find rest in   Christ the Lord, Amen!

Sing Along and be blessed
