VERSE OF THE DAY FOR AUGUST 24, 2020
Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness longsuffering; (NKJV)
Thoughts on Today's verse
The verse highlights certain rules for holy living and calls us to action as the elect; the selected ones to reign with Christ, to put on as our clothing;
- Tender mercies
- Kindness
- Humility
- Meekness
- Longsuffering.
Tender mercies means special blessings such as loving kindness, consolation, assurance, and gentle guidance.
Kindness starts with caring, being tender hearted and compassionate towards others. It must start with our own folks. Some people can demonstrate acts of kindness to strangers but become mean towards their own kin, the people they should love the most. This is not what bible teaches.
Humility is being free from pride and arrogance. It starts with being comfortable with who you are in the lord and therefore putting others first.
Meekness is power under control. I put it that way so that we don't confuse it with weakness. A weak person can't do anything but a meek person can but chooses not to. Meekness manifests itself in patient endurance of offenses.
Longsuffering is a virtue we hardly hear of these days but much needed by the world. It means long tempered as against short tempered. It is the opposite of hate, impulsive anger and overreaction. Its a cure for impatience, intolerance and oversensitivity.
Today's verse demands that as people who have been washed and cleansed by the blood of the lamb, who are looking forward to reigning with Christ, we must put on these attributes.
PRAYER: Father, you have given us a command of what you expect from us. On our own we cannot do this. Grant us in your mercy, the grace to wear these garments of discipleship through Christ, as we wait in joyful anticipation of his return, Amen.
Ameeenn..
