DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL; KEEP THE CHARGE OF THE LORD

Text: 1 Kings 2:1-25

Verse 2-3: I go the way of all the earth be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. And keep the charge of the lord your God: to walk in his ways, to keep his statues, his commandments, his judgements and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of moses, that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you turn, that the lord may fulfil his word which he spoke concerning me...

These were the last words of a dying man to his son. The best legacy any parent would give is a godly counsel. It reminded me of my late mothers parting words to us her children...."I have nothing to give you but prayer...hold on to prayer my children". Those last words that followed her last breaths have stuck with me ever since, more than every other conversation we've ever had. A man's last words mean a lot. They were a dying man' wish. The most important thing he wishes to see in the lives of his successors or what he would have  done if he were to continue living.

David however, started off giving the right counsel but ended up  showing his vulnerability as a man. He began to demand for revenge over those that wronged him, even to those he had promised forgiveness. The lesson for us is that all human, no matter how glorious and well meaning still are fallible only Jesus is the perfect man that ever walked the earth. As believers we have no other role model than him. His life on earth was sinless therefore he remains our pattern for that is what God requires of our holiness and righteousness. Jesus forgave even those that murdered him. But here David in all his beauty and glory as man after God's own heart decided to take vengeance into his own hands. This is also what we see in many societies, communities and families today. Children are given histories of what brought enmity between their family and another one, their communities and another...this begin to foster generational feuds leading to deaths.

Christians must not be found in such atrocity. We are to allow the word of God rule all of our actions and decisions no matter how grieved we may be. Parents should also learn that the most important thing to bequeath to their children is a life well lived in the service of God for this ensures a continuity of his progenitors in serving God which also is the best assurance for a successful living.
